Hackel Backs Movement To Limit Whitmer
As cases continue to rise in Macomb County, Executive Mark Hackel gives support to the Unlock Michigan campaign -- a movement to limit Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s powers amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
Hackel, who like Whitmer is a Democrat, has been critical of Whtimer’s continued action keeping Michigan in a state of emergency since mid-March.
In an interview with Crain’s Detroit, Hackel says “No one person should have endless authority to bypass another branch of government.”
Hackel’s comments come as Macomb County’s cases of COVID-19 outpaced the metro Detroit area in the month of August. Macomb saw the total confirmed cases of the coronavirus increase by over 33 percent while Detroit’s cases rose by 7 percent in the same span.
Macomb County has almost 13,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 979 related deaths.
